Construction Underway on West Humboldt Place in Chicago

Chicago—Work has begun on West Humboldt Place, a 13-unit apartment building on the West Side of Chicago. Once complete, the new housing development will serve low-income families with disabilities.
The property will include studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom units. The first floor will offer supportive services, as well as a multiple-use community center for residents, plus other low-income children and caregivers from the larger community. The building will feature a brick face veneer, light gauge framing, wood trusses and Silbonit fiber cement cladding.
Major funding for the project comes from the Illinois Housing Development Authority and the Chicago Department of Planning and Development. Private contributors include the Christopher Family Foundation, Chicago Community Trust, Northern Trust Charitable Trust and Fifth Third Bank. The Corporation for Supportive Housing provided pre-development financing.
The Children’s Place Association is the developer and Joseph J. Duffy Co. is the general contractor. Since opening in 1991, The Children’s Place has helped “to improve the present and secure the future for children, youth and family confronted by HIV/AIDS or other life-changing health conditions,” the organization explains. West Humboldt Place will allow the nonprofit to increase its housing capacity by more than two times.
The Joseph J. Duffy Co. specializes in multi-unit residential construction of all types. The Chicago-area firm has developed both market rate and affordable multifamily, and in seniors housing, it has completed assisted living and independent living facilities. Landon Bone Baker is the Architect for this project.
